Telescope Today

A telescope is a device which collects light and then magnifies images of distant objects. Telescopes are undoubtedly the important tool used in astronomy--the study of the stars. If want to study the night sky, which is one of the most exciting hobbies around, amateur astronomers are encouraged to make their first space telescope a relatively inexpensive model because some of the high priced telescopes and fairly complicated.

It is important that a beginning astronomer to start out with a telescope that is easy to use, thus increasing the chances that it will have continued usage. There are three basic types of telescopes: refractor, reflector and the most expensive and modern--the catadioptic (sometimes called a "compound" telescope).

One very important basic to understand about finding a good telescope is that aperture--the diameter of either the lens or the mirror (depending on the type of telescope you are choosing)--not magnifying power, is the most important feature on any telescope. A telescope's ability to gather light and the degree of detail it can provide are in direct proportion to the size of the aperture. Consequently, the larger the aperture, the better the view of any distant object.

This site was designed exclusively to provide accurate, reliable and useful information, tips and resources about all types of telescopes--from kid's telescopes to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.
